Triangular Corner

Rijeka, Zagreb and Ljubljana are part of a CORNERS map from the very beginning of the project: Balkan Xpedition in April 2012 started in Zagreb with a guided tour through the Museum of Contemporary art by Dragan Živadinov and finished in Rijeka with a boat trip around the Kvarner bay; Ljubljana hosted the first Kids on the Corners event in June 2014. Rijeka as a newly appointed European Capital of Culture 2020, and Zagreb and Ljubljana as capitals of Croatia and Slovenia, divided by not more than 200 kilometres are joining in a CORNERS Triangle to bring you many stories we’ve been collecting around the Europe.

From 24 May to 18 June 2016 around 15 CORNERS artists from all over the Europe will be working with audiences and presenting three artworks in Zamet, a neighborhood in the western part of Rijeka: PlaygroundIn Between and Sister of Another Mama.

Collecting and building the micro-archives is a core method for Playground, a project that collects games typical for specific areas, and reshapes some of them into new, sometimes improbable and bizarre set of rules for players. In Between is playing with an observation as a method for bringing together people living in the same neighborhood. Together with a community they are transforming a public space into a site for creation. Sister of Another Mama is questioning the media and focusing on the daily life of editorial office.

You can find more information about the schedule and artworks in the text below.

Artist taking part in this event are Siniša Labrović (Croatia), Helena Wilkström (Sweden), Riccardo Spagnulo (Italy), Elvin Flamingo (Poland), Davor Sanvincenti (Croatia), Simon Farid (UK), Miha Horvat (Slovenia), Mila Pavičević (Croatia), Joseba Irazoki (Spain), SIMKA – Simon Häggblom i Karin Lind (Sweden), Juan Aizpitarte (Spain) and Gianfranco Mirizzi (Croatia).

In the period of ten days, the artists will be developing their ideas in constant interaction with the local community. They will present their artworks at the main event set for Saturday, June 4, which will also mark the end of the CORNERS Triangle Rijeka program

CORNERS is a platform for artists and audiences, designed and driven by cultural organisations at the edges of Europe. CORNERS creates opportunities for artists and researchers to produce multidisciplinary contemporary artistic and cultural collaborative projects. The objective is to enable exchange across geographical, political and economic divisions.

CORNERS artworks have already been presented in Sweden, England and Northern Irland, and after Triangle they will travel to Spain, Poland and – again – England.

Four CORNERS artists have been traveling around Europe together, meeting game players and learning about their games. They have recreated these games, trying to bring the gaming culture along with them as well as the game itself. Some of them you might recognize; some may be a little different. Our games can be a portrait of ourselves, something in common between generations and cultures.

To explore the role of games in different cultures, seeing them as potentially possessing common languages that could cross different borders, both national and local, artists have built a multi-media playground installation serving as a tool for their research and a means to activate public spaces and participatively engage its users. As the collection of games is growing with every new place the artists visit, the playground is constantly changing its image and offering a unique cultural experience.

Playground is designed as a participatory project in which the audience is literally playing an essential part. All visitors are welcome to actively engage in the project as players in the playground installation, using it both for fun and as a cultural experience. Furthermore, the artists collaborate with local gaming groups, learn their games, teach them their own games, and together they develop new context-constructed-games that are included in the playground installation.

Observation in philosophical terms is the process of filtering sensory information through the thought process. Input is received via hearing, sight, smell, taste, or touch and then analyzed through either rational or irrational thought. What happens if the observed object knows that he/she is being observed and the observation also changes positions so that the observer is being observed by the object? As artists we can play with these roles and also with the purpose of our observations which in contrast to the science can have a more open and indistinct objective and perhaps use different methods.

“We are working with different communities, local artists and cultural organizations in order to create a wider scene of the relationship between citizens and neighbourhoods, creating situations to increase communication in communities and between them. We would like to listen and share personal and communal stories through memories and exploring every day’s life to re-create social memory together and to understand what is important to people. Also, learning new ways of using, sharing and looking at public space. We try to transform public into collaborator and to transform public space into potential creative site.”

The main focus of Sister of Another Mama is the media, precisely newspapers. By setting a temporary editorial space artists will reach out to and interact with audiences through artistic interventions and in collaboration with the local community. Together they will create their own newspapers, these works of art will be distributed alongside local newspapers.

They will tell stories, paint pictures, play games, experiment, make art and have fun. The newspaper, therefore, goes against the dominant paradigm of a traditional newspaper and includes fictional imaginary, colorful pictures and words that do not offer useful information, instead producing questions, provoking ones imagination.
