After taking part in The Sea is Glowing group exhibition in the framework of the Rijeka 2020 – European Capital of Culture program, Paris-based extra-disciplinary artist collective RYBN.ORG comes to Rijeka once again, this time with a peculiar solo exhibition entitled The Curiosity Cabinet of Industrial Property.

The exhibition will open at Filodrammatica Gallery (Korzo 28/1, Rijeka) on Thursday, September 1, 2022, at 6 p. m. After the opening, exhibition remains on view until September 23, Mondays to Saturdays from 4 to 8 p. m. Admission is free.

+++ Following the opening of the exhibition, RYBN.ORG will give a workshop entitled Precognitive Institute for Industrial Property , on Friday, September 2. Workshop participants will be encouraged to come up with their own patents based on the dystopian ideas of SF writer Philip K. Dick, in order to get ahead of tech giants like Google or Amazon in this idea. Find out more about the workshop and how to register below and by following this link.

The Curiosity Cabinet of Industrial Property showcases a collection of dystopian patents, made of some of the most terrifying specimens that have emerged in the age of surveillance capitalism.

All of the exhibited patents gathered here dramatically repel the boundaries of capitalism: by expanding capture processes towards all possible life forms, by implementing sciencefictionesque surveillance systems in every trivial technological apparatus; by deteriorating every aspect of labor conditions; by legally protecting schemes that allow the wealthiest to circumvent the law; or even, by trolling the process of patenting itself.

Placed side by side, these patents represent a look into the future as it is currently envisioned and engineered towards in Silicon Valley. It is the science fiction dystopia of Philip K. Dick turned into sharp reality.

IPPI was originally produced by the Espace Virtuel du Jeu de Paume, in the series “Futurs non conformes”, curated by disnovation.org, 2016.

MORE ABOUT THE WORKSHOP

Precognitive Institute for Industrial Property

– workshop @ Filodrammatica // Friday, September 2, 2022

In this workshop, RYBN.ORG invites participants to juxtapose and negotiate striking similarities between the imagination of Philip K. Dick and the propaganda of the Big Tech industry.

In the form of a collective experiment, participants will collaborate to form hybrids of existing patents and speculative science-fiction literature. These processes can include but are not limited to generating digital and analog visualizations or rearranging texts. The workshop aims to forge potential patents that could, in the long term, prevent Dick’s fantasies from actually being implemented by the tech industry, and ultimately avoid nightmarish premonitions from becoming reality.

– send your applications by e-mail at info@drugo-more.hr

– the workshop will be held in English
