If you don’t see it, it means it’s been done right – the work of maintenance operates in invisibility. In the theater and at the university, the job of assisting is everything opposite to the artistic genius and at the same time, a way to get into the world of geniuses by maintaining their work. Assistant’s job feeds on the identification with the institution, through care for the work of others.

The artistic and the intellectual work that needs to be taken care of belongs to the past and the future and almost never to the present, while the job of assisting means complete attention and concrete and mostly relational, communicative and reproductive activity in the present. The energy necessary for doing the job of assisting is drawn from the idea that this work has an end. But the training is the discipline.
