Since 2013, the collective The Feminalz has been creating the technoburlesque performance Image Snatchers, establishing itself as a rare and consistent presence within the Slovenian contemporary performing arts scene dedicated to the exploration and development of burlesque and cabaret. Through a vibrant mosaic of performative vignettes—marked by appropriation, recycling, and pop culture references—the group pushes the boundaries of burlesque into the realm of “theatre of discomfort.” Their work thrives on humor and dynamic energy, deliberately sidestepping the pretensions of “high art” in favor of a more radical, liberating vision of a healthy and free society.
With a flair for the bizarre and the spectacular, their performances gradually erode entrenched social norms, reintroducing unapologetic boldness into the Slovenian cultural space. Image Snatchers engages with issues such as national identity, machismo, political populism, gender stereotypes, and media melodrama. By hijacking and progressively distorting these dominant images, The Feminalz delivers a fearless critique of the hypocrisies embedded in normative constructs like “female,” “male,” “ours,” and “theirs.”
