How I Learned to Drive by Paula Vogel is a text that many refer to as Lolita written from a female perspective – from the point of view of the grown-up Li’l Bit, who recalls her childhood. While working on it in the intimate chamber space of Hartefakt House, together with actress Marta Bogosavljević and actor Svetozar Cvetković, as well as all our collaborators, we sought to find a gentle scenic language for this complex, deep, and delicate text – which does not even attempt to compete with the reality we live in every day. That reality is so much more terrifying, happening all around us, and seems discouragingly unstoppable – so, through this play, we tried to go back, step by step, exploring an issue that most people who read this text have encountered at some point in their lives.

The relationship between these two characters, Li’l Bit and her uncle, is full of ambivalence: love, tenderness, curiosity, teaching, trust, the formation of authority, mistakes, and consequently: crossing boundaries, grooming, and harm, leading all the way to self-destruction. The great value of this text lies in the author’s empathy for both characters, opening an important, polemical discussion about causes, not just consequences, of such a relationship. This is a play about forgiveness, without the awareness that forgiveness is impossible. I hope that through this performance, we will make people more awake and at least a little braver – I believe that would be more than enough in a society where we make them ashamed and silent.’
