Birds-Spies is a new original project by Kuća Nahero, conceived by theatre director and author Rajna Racz. In the form of a monodramatic musical performance (recital), it creates a hybrid artistic expression best described as a performance-concert.
This musical-theatrical postdramatic piece, performed by actor Fabijan Komljenović together with musicians Marin Živković, Matija Brajković, and Margareta Sinković, focuses on an archetypal motif from the ancient corpus: the figure of Cassandra, the misunderstood and subversive prophetess, whose unsettling visions are reimagined in the context of the present day. Cassandra’s voice, through songs and polyphonic expressions, merges with the voices of dissidents, exiles, and politically or socially undesirable thinkers of our time, artists confronted with censorship and persecution, who, like Cassandra, face the hostility of society precisely because of their prophetic and equally subversive acts.
Birds-Spies is interwoven with the motif of birds both thematically and aesthetically, but also symbolically: their free and unrestrained flight resonates all the more strongly in a society inclined to clip the wings of those who are different.
Despite the historical and contemporary dominance of male prophetic voices, in art and tradition alike, Cassandra is now placed at the center as a female prophetic voice of subversion, madness, defiance, but also boundless power. Cassandra’s body fragments, as does her voice, which becomes more than her own; it becomes a reflection of the spirit of the age. She is the leader of this musical ceremony, this performance-concert to which the audience is invited to listen. Her prophecies resemble the birds’ song before slaughter. Cassandra’s body is the synchrony of the world. She proclaims the future of a world entirely in vain.
