What does it mean to create performances in/of specific environments at a time when space has become more institutionalized and institutions more spatialized?

Space – both real and virtual – tends to incorporate power systems that define, regulate, and limit our daily practices. Although freedom of movement and expression is being purposefully curtailed – locally and globally – in the very name of “freedom”, recent events on the world stage have openly challenged the creation and maintenance of increasingly contained and delimited territories. However, alongside this phenomenon there are also moves to create participatory productions in public space: incorporating bodies and communities in joyous events that defy borders and socially regulated practices. These will be presented and discussed in order to consider the role and potential of ‘spatial dramaturgy’.

Dr Dorita Hannah is an interdisciplinary architect, designer and academic whose research focuses on spatial performativity and performances in space as active strategies for reimagining the practices in and of the public realm. She publishes on practices that negotiate between art, architecture and theatre, with her creative work including theatre architecture, scenography and interior and exhibition/installation design.
