ABOUT THE INSTALLATION
One of the selected texts from the Dream Archive, courtesy of the artist
»The installation Anima, animalis is based on around fifty selected textual descriptions of dreams in various languages, extracted from the online domain Dream Archive,* in which animals appear as the main protagonists in the manifest content of the dreams. The gallery setup, significantly defined by the space itself, is accompanied by an audio component: a sound installation consisting of animal calls/sounds (from animals featured in the selected dreams) interwoven with excerpts of white noise sounds used for falling asleep.
In the context of analyzing numerous dreams featuring animals—many of which have been entered into the Archive—the work testifies to the inseparable connection between the animal and the unconscious. In the installation, the dreams function on an individual level as psychograms, imprints of the Anima that, in the unconscious, takes on animal forms to connect the dreamer with various archetypes of animality. We can only assume that the unconscious processes ineffable emotional experiences in this way—those connected to fears, repressed traumas, significant life turning points—or simply reaffirms the importance of the animal presence within the human.
The work also indirectly raises the question of what it means to be human today in relation to other species—how much we remain animals in an era of cyborgization, where the progressive and aggressive merging of technology and the body (mind) is rapidly altering the anthropological definition of humanity.«
*Dream Archive is a domain where visitors can place/archive their dreams. The project was realised as the central work of the exhibition ‘Between Heaven and Earth,’ presented at 55 Biennale di Venezia /Croatian Pavillion /2013. So far, more than 2000 dreams in different languages have been collected in the Dream Archive. In the context of the artist’s long-standing engagement with the phenomenon of dreams, Dream Archive has, since its inception, been a growing ‘material’ base for the creation of numerous works in various media, where dreams from the Archive serve as the primary building and constructive material.
