We are pleased to announce an exhibition by visual artist and architect Hrvoje Spudić at Galerija Filodrammatica. Continuing his exploration of the analogue film projector as both an artistic medium and a machine, Spudić will present his new installation Instructed Image

Before the exhibition opening, on Thursday, 10 September at 8 PM, join us at 7 PM in the main hall of Filodrammatica for a conversation with the artist, moderated by art historian, curator and museologist Morana Matković (in Croatian).

Admission is free. The exhibition will remain on view until 2 October.

»In my research, I focus on examining and manipulating the smallest unit of a medium. For me, a medium is an open and malleable material, with every one of its aspects open to transformation.

I always begin with the following questions: how and why do things work, and why and how do we see them? I want to explore the limits and functions of devices that produce and reproduce images (and/or sound) by intervening in their technical and perceptual mechanisms.

At Filodrammatica Gallery, I present my new work Instructed Image, which continues my interventions with analogue projectors. This time, the installation consists of two modified 16mm projectors and the overlapping images of two film loops within the visible light spectrum. Both projectors have been modified to give me control over aspects that were previously technologically and mechanically “locked” – control of the motor, i.e. the speed at which the film moves, the intensity of the light, and the sharpness and focal length of the lenses. The analogue projectors can now also be synchronized, and I imagine them as a CNC machine whose four axes of variation I control through a written program. By combining the two projectors and continuously varying their speed, light, focus and focal length, a film strip lasting around ten seconds becomes the basis for an almost unlimited number of image variations. A digital instruction creates an analogue image, while the content becomes an algorithm and an image that is never repeated.

In the gallery space, visitors encounter machines in a state of continuous modulation, altering the scale and relationships of colours, contrast and flicker within the film projection. The image exists both on the film strip and on the projection surface, as well as physically in the viewer’s eye. By changing the relationship between the overlapping frames within the visible light spectrum, the persistence of vision is activated, producing an afterimage.

The image thus does not appear as a fixed result of reproduction, but as a changing process that emerges between the instruction, the machine, the material and perception.«
