I, David – an original project by Gabrijel Lazić and Nastja Uršula Virk offers an innovative and powerful theatrical approach to the terrifying story of David Reimer, aiming to re-examine deep-rooted binary understandings of gender and the societal expectations stemming from them.
If gender is a normative category defined by civilizational expectations, then it also presupposes the existence of bodies beyond it: bodies that, in one way or another, do not fit into what is defined as normative. These bodies fall outside the discourse on what gender should be. At best, the dominant discourse still overlooks bodies beyond the norm; at worst, it pathologizes and medicalizes them. The violence inflicted upon bodies that, in one way or another, do not conform to normative standards can be found in the story of David Reimer.
