This is my farewell to the shame I have carried about my body, food, and life in this country. A farewell to the shame I have nurtured for so long—a shame that is not always mine, but often the result of other people’s actions. This performance is an act of acceptance, gratitude, and letting go. It is time for shame to leave me and belong to those it truly belongs to.
Shame is an original performance by actress Angela Stojanovska that draws on personal experience to explore shame surrounding the body, physical appearance, and life in a society that produces and perpetuates it. Moving between vulnerability, humour, and direct engagement with the audience, Stojanovska examines how much of our shame is truly our own, and how much we take on from others – through their actions, gazes, and expectations.
The performance was developed within the performing arts platform of the feminist festival Firstborn Girl – Rehearsing Feminist Futures.
Admission is free // no reservations // free tickets can be picked up at the venue one hour before the start of each performance, subject to venue capacity
