A conversation on censorship, institutions and spaces of resistance

Koliko su Hrvatska i Srbija danas daleko, a koliko opasno blizu kada je riječ o ograničavanju umjetničkih sloboda? Jesmo li svjedoci istog procesa, njegovih različitih varijanti ili tek lokalnih verzija puno šireg, globalnog udara na autonomiju umjetnosti? Koliko se iza priča o “zaštiti nacionalnih vrijednosti”, “odgovornosti”, “javnom interesu” i “prihvatljivom sadržaju” kriju precizni mehanizmi za eliminaciju kritičke umjetnosti?

Na koje se načine umjetnost najbolje disciplinira: cenzurom, političkim i institucionalnim pritiscima, državno sponzoriranom diskreditacijom umjetnika, uskraćivanjem prostora i novca, intervencijama u programe i kadrovske odluke – ili stvaranjem atmosfere u kojoj umjetnici i umjetnice unaprijed znaju što smiju reći, a što trebaju prešutjeti?

O svemu tome i o puno više s Anom Miljanić iz beogradskog Centra za kulturnu dekontaminaciju, jednog od ključnih prostora otpora nacionalizmu i ratu u Srbiji 1990-ih, razgovarat će Oliver Frljić.

How far apart are Croatia and Serbia today, and how dangerously close are they when it comes to restricting artistic freedom? Are we witnessing the same process in two different forms, or local manifestations of a much broader, global assault on the autonomy of art? Behind the rhetoric of “protecting national values,” “responsibility,” “the public interest,” and “acceptable content,” how often do we find carefully constructed mechanisms for silencing critical art?

What are the most effective ways of disciplining art today? Censorship? Political and institutional pressure? State-sponsored campaigns to discredit artists? Cutting off access to funding and venues? Interfering with artistic programmes and personnel decisions? Or, perhaps most effectively, creating an atmosphere in which artists know in advance what they are allowed to say and what they are expected to leave unsaid?

Oliver Frljić will discuss all this and much more with Ana Miljanić of Belgrade’s Centre for Cultural Decontamination, one of the most important spaces of resistance to nationalism and war in Serbia during the 1990s.
