The Pelicot Trial is based on one of the most disturbing criminal trials of recent years: the prosecution of Dominique Pelicot and fifty other men accused of repeatedly raping Gisèle Pelicot after her husband had drugged her over the course of many years.
Swiss director Milo Rau and dramaturge Servane Dècle transform authentic court transcripts, testimonies and public statements into a powerful work of documentary theatre. Rejecting sensationalism, the performance examines the structures of violence, responsibility and collective silence, asking how justice, the media and society shape our understanding of victims and perpetrators. At its heart lies Gisèle Pelicot’s courageous decision to open the trial to the public so that, in her own words, “shame should change sides.”
The Belgrade version of the performance was created in collaboration with nearly thirty actors, cultural workers, and activists, whose presence bears witness to collective responsibility and to the potential of art to become a space for publicly confronting violence and social injustice. This version of the performance was also live-streamed as part of ne:Bitef, independently organised festival in response to the cancellation of the institutional Bitef.
