The performance draws inspiration from the scarcely documented life of Slavko Goldschmidt, a theatre actor deported to the Jasenovac concentration camp during the Second World War, where he became a member of the camp’s theatre ensemble.
The piece offers a poetic meditation on memory, art, and the impossibility of fully recovering the past. When only fragments of a life remain, every attempt at interpretation raises more questions than it can answer. The performance therefore inhabits the space between historical record and artistic imagination.
Beginning with the question of how to create theatre almost without its essential elements – without a dramatic text, libretto, score, elaborate scenography or theatrical spectacle – the work explores what remains when performance is stripped to its most fragile form.
The Incredibly Unknown Case of Slavko G. from Kutina is an intimate tribute to an artist who continued to create under impossible circumstances before his life was violently cut short by a totalitarian regime that must never be repeated. At the same time, it celebrates art as a space of resistance, hope, and the preservation of humanity even in the darkest of times.
